Keeping the bicycle chain clean and lubricated is a good way to extend the life of the transmission system and keep the bicycle shifting smoothly, and in the long run, it is actually a more cost-effective move. And even better, you can do all this at home with the right supplies and some basic knowledge.
Before we start, we formally remind you: cleaning the chain is a chore. So take off that evening gown, put on gloves, let’s get started!

1. Remove oil from the chain. If you have a designated chain cleaning tool, please fill it with a bicycle-specific degreaser and wrap the tool around the chain according to the instructions. Then, use the other free hand to tilt the pedal backwards. The brush in the chain washer will clean all corners and crevices while collecting the degreasing agent in its storage tank.

2. If you do not have special tools, please use a brush to remove oil from the chain. Toothbrush or nail brush can achieve good results. Just add some degreaser to the brush and keep it on top of the chain, then pour the pedals backward. Repeat this step at the bottom of the chain, always scrubbing the links under the drive system.

3. Scrub and rinse the chain with soapy water to remove excess degreaser.

4. Select the lubricant. If you are riding in wet, muddy conditions, use wet lubricant, if you are riding in dry conditions, use dry lubricant.

5. Lubricate the chain. Carefully apply a small drop of lubricant to the top of each section in the chain. Make sure that the lubricant is aligned exactly with the rollers. Allowing lubricant to drip to the outside of the chain will only attract more dirt.

6. Wipe off the excess lubricant and you can start riding!

Now that you have received training in chain maintenance, be sure to pay attention to the creaking and squeaking noises. These may be signs that your chain needs maintenance. If you ride often, remember to clean and lubricate the chain at least once a month. If you like off-road riding, your bike will become muddy, so you should wash the chain more frequently. Ride happily on the mountain trails!
